Profil
Design shouldn’t only be, it must be interdisciplinary. The division of the study program into basic studies, eight areas of competence and interdisciplinary teachingis just as logical as it is a future-proof concept – and the main strength of the Faculty of Design.
»Designing« means»mental design«. Designing competence is acquired through hands-on practical experience as well as through a sound theoretical basis: teachings in art, cultural and design history, in basic marketing, advertising and social psychology span all eight areas of competence. In this way, the HAWK combines its tradition as a »School of Practical Art« with science and with the innovation of modular study courses at the same time.

Studying and teaching
The new study program in modular form is a two-stage study system with a Bachelor degree and a consecutive Master degree, both of which qualify graduates to work in this field. The Bachelor of Arts (Design) is, in connection with Master of Arts ( Design), designed as a future-oriented continuation and redevelopment of the diploma course of studies, which is now being discontinued. The study program now offered is a practically oriented course of studies in the sense of the structure requirements that European countries have in common for the accreditation of Bachelor and Master study programs. In keeping with the other HAWK faculties, the Faculty of Design has decided on a standard period of study for the Bachelor : Master in a proportion of 3 : 2 years ( 180 : 120 credits ).

Outlook
Job descriptions and job requirements in the design disciplines have changed more during the past ten years than in the 50 years before. It is safe to assume that this process of change will not only continue, but that it will accelerate to become faster than ever before. This can be attributed to the technological innovations in the unabated development of the information and communications age, which also increase the demands placed on the type and scope of design.
Adapting the study contents to a future job situation that will change again and just as quickly in the next 10 years is virtually impossible today. Consequently, any serious future planning must first and foremost institutionalize the ability to react, which requires as open a teaching and learning system as possible.
The restructuring of the Faculty of Design enables continual adjustment to current requirements.
