Lighting-Design

Can you picture yourself moulding living spaces with light, creating an ambience that positively affects emotions and moods of individuals, thus contributing to an improvement of our quality of life?

For the excellence of visual perception within our environment at work, at home and outdoors light is of significant importance. Light surrounds us everywhere and at all times. Light shapes our experience, well-being and health. Light also contributes greatly to the eco-balance.

Thus, lighting design is a fundamental component of any building project in architecture, in urban spaces or at events of any kind. Lighting planners are designers with a particular understanding and experience in the field of interplay between light, space and human beings. Refined technical skills, creative intuition, an acute environmental consciousness and a competent insight in design and architecture are indispensable characteristics of this profession.

Course of Studies

At its Faculty of Design the University of Applied Sciences and Arts HAWK Hildesheim is the only institution in Germany offering a course at Lighting Design concluding with the degree “Bachelor of Arts”. The “Master of Arts” programme focusing on lighting design and project management is currently at the final conceptual stage and will be launched in 2011.

The lighting design course has a strongly interdisciplinary orientation. Apart from basic skills at photometry and conceptual fundamentals joint design courses with architects, colour and product designers mediate pivotal competences for the professional practice.

Excursions and the participation in symposia and congresses complement the traineeship. This is where student lighting designers, manufacturer staff, members of boards and committees, teachers and other lighting students from all over the world meet.
The resulting establishment of networks among like-minded people and with potential employers is thoroughly intentional.

Faculty of Design

The domain of competence of lighting design is part of an advanced training structure at the Faculty of Design at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts. The Faculty of Design encompasses the following nine fields of competence: advertising design, colour design, corporate identity/corporate design, digital design, graphic design, interior architecture/interior design, lighting design, metal design and product design. Roughly 650 students are coached by 25 professors and 13 assistants.
At workshops and laboratories for computing, light, wood, synthetics, colours, model making, photography and printing practical experience can be acquired and deepened.

Career Prospects

The alumni anticipate a multitude of career options at free design offices, event agencies, exhibition stand design offices, the theatre, project departments of lamp and luminaire manufacturers, architecture and interior architecture offices and at specialized electrical engineering offices. Thus, new possibilities continue to unfold throughout the free economy.
