Health Insurance

All students studying at HAWK require adequate health insurance. Without proof of sufficient health insurance cover the enrolement at HAWK is not possible!

If you have health insurance in another EU country and are holder of an EHIC card, you are covered by your national health scheme and do not need additional cover of a German health insurance. Please enclose a copy of your EHIC card with your application documents. Make sure your EHIC card is valid for the complete time of your stay in Germany.

All other students (below 30 years of age) take out a public German health insurance for students upon their arrival. This covers all costs for medical treatment and hospital stays, plus most of the cost of any prescription medicines. It is available from a number of public health insurance providers and costs around € 80 per month.

The student advisers of the International Office will provide information and assistance in obtaining insurance.

Housing

An accommodation service is offered for exchange students. You have the possibility to indicate on the application form if you wish an accommodation offer and whether you prefer accommodation at a dormitory or a shared flat. The International Office will try to find a room in the preferred category at a reasonable price and send you a rental contract, which has to be signed and sent back.

At our different locations rents (standard category) range from € 200 to € 300 including electricity, water and heating. Additionally, you will need to pay a deposit of one month's rent when you move into your room. When you move out, this deposit will be refunded, assuming that nothing has been damaged. Most of the rooms come with internet access and a telephone connection and are fully furnished. However, this does not include blankets, pillows, sheets, towels, dishes or cutlery.

For more information please see the  Information Guide for International Students.

Students with special needs

The HAWK supports students with special needs and therefore furthers the implementation of structural and organisational measures needed to provide for adequate study conditions.

The faculties in Goettingen are new buildings and have a high standard of accessibility for students with walking disabilities or who are confined to a wheelchair. A mobile workspace for visually handicapped and blind students is available in all libraries. At most locations in Holzminden and Hildesheim, accessibility has been improved by the installation of elevators and a lifting platform. The HAWK website is barrier-free.

There are offers of mobile child care at all three study locations, and in Hildesheim the HAWK operates a day-care centre.

If you are considering applying to HAWK as an exchange student with special needs, please contact the team of the International Office in advance.
